EdinElyte Border Collies – Our Story
Eden Border Collies was founded in 2016, though the heart of our legacy began long before that. Johlene’s journey with dogs started in 1994 with her beloved Staffie. Everything changed in 1996 when she welcomed Tessa, the Border Collie who ignited her lifelong passion for the breed. Together, they excelled in Dog Jumping competitions and even broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest weave between 60 poles on 4 December 1999.
As the years went on, Johlene noticed concerning health issues in some Border Collies she owned. Determined to uplift the breed in South Africa, she took a bold step in 2012. Alongside Nadine Shortland (Mackland), she imported one of the country’s first ee‑red Border Collies from New Dreams Borders in Italy — a remarkable dog known to many as Sunny. Johlene and Nadine worked closely with Sunny until 2016, after which Johlene continued her breeding program independently.
It was during this time that I, Gia, joined her. Although my original passion was for Boerboels, Border Collies quickly captured my heart. In 2016, we registered with KUSA and welcomed our first litter together — the unforgettable Magic Litter. (Johlene had bred litters before this, but this was our first as a team.) From that moment, our shared mission was clear: to produce balanced, healthy Border Collies with excellent temperament and correct breed-standard conformation.
On 19 July 2021, tragedy struck when my beloved Johlene passed away from Covid. The loss was devastating. With the help of close friends, many of our dogs were placed in loving homes during that difficult period. By mid‑2022, I registered my own kennel affix and continued with a select few Border Collies I had kept. At the same time, Eden Border Collies evolved into EdinElyte, marking a new chapter built on the foundation Johlene created.
On 1 July, my first independent litter under EdinElyte was born. With this new beginning came thoughtful refinements to the breeding program. I’ve spent the past year deepening my knowledge, researching extensively, and shaping a vision that honours Johlene’s legacy while moving the kennel forward.
Today, EdinElyte strives for well‑balanced, athletic Border Collies — dogs that are not only show‑quality but also versatile, capable, and true to the breed’s working heritage. Above all, health and temperament remain at the core of every decision we make.
